Her Life Story
Maryam Khademian was born in Tehran, Iran. As a “miracle child”, she was not expected to survive following her mother’s pregnancy complicated by malaria.
By age 22, she had lived through Iran’s Revolution, the loss of her father, eight years of war, and an arranged marriage. Against her will, she immigrated to Canada with her husband, where she would start her studies. At the age of 28 and after ten years of arranged marriage, she managed to get a divorce and started working as a respiratory therapist.
Throughout her 12-year career as a respiratory therapist, Maryam witnessed many losses having spent time with patients and their families in grief. She witnessed firsthand the limitations of the traditional medical model when it comes to helping with the psychosocial healing of patients and their families. During this challenging yet enlightening period in her life, Maryam remarried and became a mother of two children.
While she enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom for 13 years, there was always a burning desire to make a difference in society. She decided to change her life around, and so began the pursuit of her lifelong dream of becoming a counsellor. Maryam strongly believes in the power of intention, and her resilience has been carrying her through obstacles to this day.
