BC Bereavement Helpline

Agency Description

Through a provincial toll-free and confidential helpline, trained volunteers offer compassionate listening, information, and referrals for individuals who are suffering from grief and bereavement. Provides training and education for professionals on related topics, including sudden and traumatic loss; fees are charged. Also offers specialized grief and loss groups; see separate listing. Maintains an annual Grief Support Resource Guide that is available to members; membership fee is $75 per year. Helpline and office hours are from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. Nonprofit society, registered charity.

Compassionate Friends – Metro Vancouver (Burnaby)

Service Description
Support groups for bereaved parents who have experienced the death of a child; siblings and grandparents are also welcome. Burnaby meetings are held at 7 pm on the last Wednesday of each month at the Jubilee United Church Memorial Room, 7591 Gray Avenue; use side entrance from alley. Additional meetings in Vancouver are held at various public libraries; call or email for information or check social media.

Grief Support Groups

Service Description
Offers support services including support groups for the bereaved. Suicide Grief Support Group is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide; offered twice a year in partnership with the crisis centre in Vancouver, and a funeral home in Surrey. Homicide Grief Support Group is a support group for those who have lost a loved one to homicide; offered once a year. Both groups are co-facilitated and run for eight weeks. Provides a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate environment to share stories and insights. Also provides bereavement survival tools, practical support, and information and referrals. Fees may be charged; subsidies may be available. Preregistration is required. Support is also provided to those who have lost a loved one due to substance use or substance poisoning. Office hours are from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday.

Grief After a Substance Passing (GRASP)
Agency Description
Support group that provides families and individuals a platform to speak openly about losing someone to substance use. The Vancouver chapter meets from 7 pm to 9 pm on the second Thursday of every month (Gilmore Community School, Burnaby). Individual chapters schedule meetings and preregistration is required for new attendees.

Living Through Loss Counselling Society of BC
Agency Description
Provides individual and group counselling to youth and adults experiencing loss or life changes such as death, relationship break-up, chronic health issues, suicide, accidents, violent crime, workplace losses, transitions, anticipatory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and special needs. Designs custom workshops and sudden death and traumatic loss debriefs; offers community education on the impact of loss; and provides training for grief and loss professionals (level 1 and level 2 classes); available online and in-class. Neurofeedback therapy, trauma counselling (EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Shiatsu therapy are also available. Also offers information sessions upon request. Counselling is available by telephone or online via Facetime, Skype and email. Accepts CVAP, WorkSafeBC, and ICBC cases. Fees are $110 per hour for individual sessions. Office hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, with some weekend and evening appointments available. Nonprofit society.
