Sexual Abuse & Incest
We are all threatened with suffering from three directions: from our own body…; from the external world, which may rage against us with overwhelming and merciless forces of destruction; and finally from our relations to other fellowmen. The suffering which comes from this last source is perhaps more painful than any other. – Freud
The Lasting Impact of Sexual Abuse
Trauma is the Greek word for “wound” and is synonymous with words like shock, agony, torture, misery, grief and torment. This helps us understand the deep distress that victims of sexual abuse face and the lasting, life-altering effects such events can trigger.
Sexual abuse can leave a lasting impact on almost every aspect of the victim’s life. Being a surviving victim of sexual abuse or incest can be a debilitating experience that when left untreated, can lead to PTSD, depression and anxiety. These conditions oftentimes remain undiagnosed due to patients feeling overwhelming shame and guilt over their experience. The physical, emotional and mental health consequences of leaving such conditions untreated can be immense both short-term and long-term.
Grieving The Past
Such traumatic experiences are different for everyone. Healing from sexual abuse is a slow psychological process that can be processed by the victim in a way that allows the experience to be seen and accepted as a past negative event, rather than one that controls their life.
